We arrived at our camp in the Gobi desert after a very long, bumpy, dusty ride on an old bus. I did not realize that the seat belts were used to keep you in your seat because the huge potholes every few meters will make you hit the ceiling! This was 10 hours on a dirt track, where in typical Mongolian fashion, the driver got lost many times. At one point we stopped a man herding camels from a motorbike, gave him a cigarette in exchange for some directions. On the way i also saw many wild horses, eagles (spotted brown and white) goats and of course sheep. The landscape seemed endless as we drove through green valleys surrounded by low mountains.
- Camel Man This should be the image for Camel cigarettes!
- dromadaire the Mongolian camel has 2 humps. i was surprised to see how fast they could run.
- dirt track road all roads lead to the same place in Mongolia- especially if you drive in circles enough- which we often did! there are usually several track per road- you get to choose from full of ruts to not quite full of ruts. there is no paving until you are well into the city. they mostly drive on the grass until it becomes a road. we were very lucky that we did not have engine problems. the bus driver would get out every hour or so and tighten his wheels!
